If you have large files in a folder (i.e. 150 files that are over 3MB) - make sure your pagination settings are 20 images per page, vs. 50 or 100.
Users can always "show more" or go to another page - but having fewer pages to load initially will speed up the opening process.
Go to ADMIN>TEMPLATES>PAGINATION to make this change.
