Can A Template Be Edited After it's Already in Use?

Modified on Thu, 30 Oct at 4:46 PM

Each template is made up of two components: an editable section and a non-editable section.

Updates made to the editable section will not impact already-existing jobs.

However, if anything is modified in the non-editable section, it will affect current jobs, and any output generated by those jobs will inherit the update.

A few additional notes to be aware of:

Adjusting style definitions can lead to unintended consequences—sometimes what you see in the online editor no longer matches what comes out of InDesign Server. It's generally best not to change style definitions in templates that are already in use.

When editing templates the following characteristics of the template MUST stay the same, or there will be errors with existing jobs.

1) The number of pages
2) The page sizes
3) The measurement units used in the document
